President of the Faisalabad Chamber of Commerce and Industry (FCCI), Farooq Yousaf Sheikh, has expressed his approval of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI)'s decision to postpone its upcoming long march. He urged both the government and opposition to prioritize economic stability and avoid allowing political disagreements to hinder business operations.
Call for Political Unity
In a statement released on Saturday, Sheikh emphasized the importance of maintaining normalcy in daily life and commercial activities. He advocated for political discourse to focus on constructive solutions rather than personal rivalries or opportunistic gains, stating, "Political parties should not turn the issue into a matter of personal ego or political point-scoring."
The Economic Implications of Protests
Highlighting the severe economic ramifications of political protests, Sheikh referred to recent comments from the Finance Minister. He noted that strikes, long marches, and road blockages could result in economic losses estimated at around Rs. 120 billion per day. Such disruptions heavily impact transportation and the flow of import and export consignments, resulting in detrimental effects on businesses, workers, traders, and consumers.
Emphasizing Peaceful Demonstrations
Sheikh urged opposition parties to ensure that any future demonstrations remain peaceful and do not instill fear or insecurity among citizens. He also advocated for measures that would prevent blockades and other disruptive actions that could impede the movement of commercial vehicles and cargo.
A Shared National Responsibility
"Pakistan is a shared national asset, and all stakeholders must avoid actions that could harm the country’s economic stability and public welfare," Sheikh concluded, underscoring the collective responsibility to protect the nation’s economic interests.
