KARACHI: A murder investigation has been launched following the discovery of the lifeless body of an 18-year-old bride, Zainab, on the rooftop of a residential building in Karachi's Defence Housing Authority (DHA). Her body was found late on November 17, and police have registered a case of murder at the Darakhshan Police Station based on a complaint filed by her father, Abdul Jabbar.
18-year-old bride: Background on the Victim
Zainab had recently relocated to Karachi from Sialkot approximately one month after her marriage. At the time of her untimely death, she was staying at her husband’s maternal aunt’s residence in the Badar Commercial area of DHA Phase V.
Discovery and Initial Investigation
According to Abdul Jabbar, Zainab was temporarily residing with her husband's relatives when she reportedly went to the rooftop on the evening prior to her death and did not return. Family members later discovered her unconscious and assumed she had been strangled. Despite swift medical intervention, her death was confirmed upon arrival at the hospital. Jabbar expressed his belief that his daughter was a victim of foul play, leading him to take legal action.
Police Response
The police have deemed the circumstances of her death suspicious, prompting a thorough investigation. Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) South, Mahzor Ali, stated that the murder case was formally registered based on the complaint and that statements from Zainab’s husband’s aunt and cousin have been documented. He noted that additional questioning of other individuals deemed suspicious is underway, promising that those found responsible will face justice. As part of the investigation, Abdul Hadi, the aunt’s son, is currently in custody.
Autopsy Findings
Dr. Summaiya, a police surgeon, indicated that preliminary autopsy results suggest Zainab died from strangulation. Samples have been collected for further chemical analysis and DNA testing to assist in the investigation.
Previous Incidents
This tragic incident raises a reminder of another case earlier this year when model Humaira Asghar was found dead under mysterious circumstances in her flat in DHA Phase VI. Her death also aroused public interest and concern regarding the safety of women in Karachi.
