The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) has officially announced the schedule for the by-election to fill the Senate seat vacated by the late Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) leader Irfan Siddiqui. Siddiqui, a notable political figure and close aide to PML-N president Nawaz Sharif, passed away on November 10, shortly after the upper house of Parliament approved the 27th Constitutional Amendment Bill, which restructured the judiciary and clarified the roles of senior judges and military officials.

By-Election Schedule

Polling for the vacant Senate seat is set to take place on December 9, with candidates able to submit their nomination papers from November 20 to 21. The ECP has confirmed that scrutiny of these papers will be completed by November 25. Additionally, November 29 has been designated as the final date for filing appeals regarding the acceptance or rejection of nomination papers. Candidates may withdraw their nominations until December 1. Voting will occur on December 9 from 9:00 AM to 7:00 PM at the Punjab Assembly.

Irfan Siddiqui's Political Legacy

Irfan Siddiqui, who was a prominent member of various Senate committees, including the Standing Committee on Foreign Affairs, played a significant role in legislative matters. He also served on committees focused on Business Advisory, Human Rights, Information and Broadcasting, Interior and Narcotics Control, and National Health Services, Regulations and Coordination. His passing marks a significant loss for the PML-N, where he was known for his dedication and expertise in political affairs.

The 27th Constitutional Amendment Bill, which Siddiqui witnessed pass through Parliament, received majority support, including votes from members of the Awami National Party, Saifullah Abro of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf, and Ahmed Khan from the Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam (F).
