Minister of State for Interior Talal Chaudhry emphasized the need for a change in mindset rather than merely altering the leadership in Pakistan. Speaking on Geo News' program "Naya Pakistan," Chaudhry referred to the tragic loss of 16 lives in Kohat while the Chief Minister was absent from the province, highlighting a critical gap in leadership during crises.
Change in mindset: Call for Accountability
Chaudhry urged the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party to learn from past mistakes, stating, "Pakistan cannot afford to overlook these issues any longer." He pointed out that while various political groups hold rallies and protests, they should be mindful of the conditions that accompany the right to protest.
The Importance of Political Unity
The minister stressed that success against terrorism in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa is contingent upon the solidarity of political forces behind security agencies. He noted, "We cannot effectively combat terrorism unless we achieve success in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, which will require robust political backing for our security forces."
Critique of Existing Governance
Chaudhry criticized the current government, which has been in power for 14 years, suggesting that comparisons with other provinces reveal concerning data; he mentioned that 70% of patients in Islamabad’s hospitals are from Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. He also raised alarms about corruption, citing an alleged incident where 40 billion rupees were found in a dumper driver's account.
Opposition's Response
Responding to Chaudhry's remarks, PTI leader Shaukat Yousafzai argued that if their long march had taken place, only a couple of roads in Islamabad would have been blocked. He contended that the government’s actions to completely shut down the city and its motorways were motivated by fear. Yousafzai expressed that the federal ministers' accusations against the PTI were disrespectful to the millions of citizens who supported the party.
Resilience in the Face of Adversity
Yousafzai further noted the sacrifices made by the people of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and security forces against terrorism. He questioned how the government could assign blame for terrorism in Balochistan when the PTI does not govern the province. He concluded his remarks with a declaration of ongoing protest regardless of governmental actions, asserting that violence has never extinguished movements and that the PTI's popularity is only increasing. He affirmed, "We do not need any containers removed; we will protest wherever they are placed."
