LAHORE: In an effort to combat the activities of the banned Tehreek-e-Labbaik Pakistan (TLP), the Punjab government has established 12 Joint Investigation Teams (JITs) to investigate ongoing cases against the organization. This initiative follows a pattern of violence and unrest associated with the TLP and aims to ensure law and order within the province.

Joint Investigation Teams: Formation of Investigation Teams

The recent notification from the provincial Home Department indicates that seven of the JITs will focus on cases in Lahore, while five will address incidents in Sheikhupura. These teams comprise representatives from the Punjab police, the Counter-Terrorism Department (CTD), and various intelligence agencies, tasked with investigating cases registered under provisions related to terrorism and other serious offenses.

This collective action was prompted by police reports indicating that more than 2,000 individuals associated with the TLP have been detained in connection with 75 different cases. The crackdown aligns with the federal government's designation of TLP as a proscribed entity under the Anti-Terrorism Act (ATA) last month, following a series of violent protests sparked by the police's dismantling of a protest camp in Muridke. This incident tragically resulted in the deaths of a police station house officer and three others.

Request for Federal Action

In response to the escalating situation, the Punjab government has decided to request federal action against the TLP in other provinces. During a recent meeting led by Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz, officials reported that the government had effectively dismantled much of the TLP's operational infrastructure. Among the findings were modern weapons, ammunition, and protective gear recovered from the group’s hideouts.

Additionally, the spokesperson remarked that measures have been implemented to curtail financial backing for the TLP's activities. The authorities have frozen assets amounting to Rs23.4 billion, linked to key officials of the banned organization. Moreover, 92 bank accounts belonging to the TLP have been frozen, and legal action is underway against nine individuals accused of financing the group.

Enhancing Community Relations

The government also reported the distribution of over 61,000 informational forms to mosques and imams across Punjab, with more than 50,000 (82%) imams registering with the government as part of community engagement initiatives. As part of these efforts, five major Wifat ul Madaris have agreed to support the registration of mosques and imams to foster peace.

In conclusion, Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz has instructed local authorities to maintain respect for imams and to ensure the consistent enforcement of a ban on wall chalking throughout Punjab, emphasizing that this will not be tolerated in any city of the province.
