Karachi is bracing for a significant water shortfall following a power breakdown at the Dhabeji pumping station on Sunday morning. This disruption, which affected operations in the second phase of water supply, could result in a deficit of up to 100 million gallons of water per day. The Karachi Water and Sewerage Corporation (KWSC) reported that the incident occurred at 6:35 AM, when a sudden electricity outage halted essential pump operations.
Karachi water shortage: Disruption of Water Supply
The Dhabeji pumping station serves as Karachi's primary water source, and its operations are critically dependent on a stable power supply. Even brief outages can lead to considerable supply interruptions. A KWSC spokesperson indicated that the recent breakdown caused the shutdown of two pumps, impacting the water flow from Line No 5. "The line was directly affected when power was suspended," the spokesperson noted.
In response to the outage, KWSC teams have been dispatched to the site to execute emergency repairs. However, the Dhabeji system has recently been plagued by ongoing technical difficulties. Notably, on November 5, the K-III pump house was non-operational for 36 hours due to a cable fault.
Ongoing Challenges
The water crises in Karachi continue to escalate, exacerbated by frequent mechanical failures this year, which have left many neighborhoods underserved. The Dhabeji pumping station has endured persistent technical issues and a lack of adequate maintenance over the years, significantly undermining its capacity to meet the city's water demands.
