Deputy Prime Minister Ishaq Dar has expressed deep concern regarding the current security situation in the region and the Middle East. Speaking at the 27th session of the Economic Cooperation Organization (ECO) Council of Ministers, he emphasized the necessity for practical measures through dialogue to enhance regional cooperation.
Regional security: ECO Leadership and Goals
Dar announced that Pakistan has assumed the presidency of the ECO Council of Ministers for the term 2026-2027. He stated that the collective goal of the ECO is to make the region more integrated, dynamic, and competitive. Trade among ECO member states accounts for approximately 8% of total regional trade, which serves a population of nearly 500 million people. He urged for a collective effort oriented towards promoting peace, resilience, solidarity, and shared prosperity.
Recognition of UN Efforts
In his address, Dar recognized the leadership and efforts of United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres. He affirmed Pakistan's commitment to resolving conflicts peacefully in accordance with international law and noted that the country has collaborated with its allies to achieve diplomatic solutions. Dar reiterated Pakistan's priority to promote regional economic integration and mutual trade, stressing the urgency of accelerating key corridor projects connecting Central Asia to the ports of the Arabian Sea.
Climate Change Challenges
Highlighting the challenges posed by climate change, Dar stated that it represents a significant threat to water security, agriculture, and employment in the region. He called for enhanced cooperation in developing climate-resilient infrastructure and sustainable energy solutions, asserting that Pakistan is ready to play the role of a gateway for the region.
Enhancing Trade Agreements
Dar expressed a desire to strengthen the ECO's trade agreements, advocating for the activation and digitization of the ECO's free trade area. He emphasized that increasing access to free trade markets would foster business growth and innovation.
Security Concerns in Afghanistan
Addressing security issues, the Deputy Prime Minister pointed out that terrorism emanating from Afghan territory continues to impede peace, stability, and development efforts in the region. He emphasized Pakistan's desire for a peaceful, prosperous, and stable Afghanistan and stated that constructive engagement with the Taliban regime is essential. Dar concluded by indicating that Pakistan's primary expectation from the Taliban government is to address legitimate security concerns, stressing that without resolving the terrorism threat, regional peace and development remain unattainable.
