The Congressional Pakistan Caucus has commended the Punjabi government for its initiative to modernize the brick kiln sector. This transformative effort is seen as a potential model for eliminating bonded labor and attracting ethical foreign investment.

Brick kiln modernization: Lawmakers' Appreciation

In a letter addressed to Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif, Congressmen Thomas Suozzi and Jack Bergman expressed their appreciation for the government’s visionary approach to modernizing the brick kiln industry. They highlighted that such reforms address pressing environmental challenges while combating bonded labor practices.

Addressing Bonded Labor

Referencing the US State Department’s 2022 Trafficking in Persons Report, the letter pointed out the reality that over 4.5 million individuals in Pakistan are still trapped in the peshgi system, a form of bonded labor that persists in various sectors. The lawmakers emphasized the provincial administration's dedication to this significant initiative during their briefings.

Economic and Ethical Opportunities

The letter further noted that modernizing the brick kiln sector would facilitate Pakistan in meeting its international commitments and making Punjab a more appealing destination for foreign direct investment. American businesses, in particular, are likely to be interested in ethical and sustainable partnerships stemming from these reforms.

The Congressional Pakistan Caucus stated, "These reforms will enhance bilateral economic relations and strengthen the overall Pakistan-US partnership," underscoring Punjab's potential to serve as a leading province for this initiative.

Support for Reforms

The lawmakers reiterated their commitment to supporting efforts to eradicate bonded labor, encouraging the provincial leadership to seek assistance whenever necessary. "The Pakistan Caucus wholeheartedly supports all efforts to end bonded labor," the letter concluded, reflecting a strong alliance in the pursuit of human rights and ethical labor practices.
